An early goal by Yuki Muto kick-started Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan to a 2-0 win over Sydney FC in their opening Group H match of the AFC Champions League on Wednesday at Saitama Stadium.
Muto scored in the eighth minute and Shinzo Koroki got the second in the 65th minute.
In the eighth minute, Red Diamonds opened the scoring when a defensive mix-up by Zac Anderson and goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic let the ball fall kindly for Muto who scored with a low shot in the bottom corner to give his side the early lead.
In the 40th minute, they almost increased their lead when a bicycle kick by Tomoaki Makino was cleared off the goal line by Chris Naumoff.
Anderson nearly pulled a goal back in the 54th minute when his effort from close stuck keeper Shusaku Nishikawa on the head instead of going into the goal.
Janjetovic made a reflex save to deny Tsukasa Umesaki from giving his side a second goal in the 60th minute.
Five minutes later the home side scored when Janjetovic was adjudged to have fouled Koroki in the box. Koroki calmly took the penalty kick to put his side 2-0 up.
In the 77th minute, Janjetovic struggled to handle a long-range shot by Endo but before the forward could take advantage with a second attempt the ball was cleared by Abbas.
In the end, Red Diamonds were the deserved winners.
