Japan’s Gamba Osaka and Korea Republic’s Suwon Samsung Bluewings played out a goalless draw in their opening Group G encounter of the AFC Champions League at Suwon World Cup Stadium on Wednesday.
Last season’s K-League Classic runners-up dominated for the most part of the 90 minutes, hitting the woodwork twice.
Just before the break, Kwon Chang-hoon smashed the ball against the foot of the post with Gamba goalkeeper Masaaki Higashiguchi beaten following Ko Cha-won’s backheel pass from inside a packed penalty area.
A while later, with the score still at 0-0, Suwon were not far from snatching all three points in stoppage time as Kim Jong-min laid a cross back to Kim Jong-woo just outside the area only for the substitute’s shot to cannon back off the frame of the goal for the second time in the match.
Both teams now occupy second and third place in Group G after Melbourne Victory beat Shanghai SIPG earlier in the day.
