La Liga basement club Granada have sacked Jose Ramon Sandoval as their head coach, with Jose Gonzalez appointed his successor.
The Nazaries relieved Sandoval of his duties on Monday in the wake of their 2-1 defeat at home to Valencia the previous day, which left them rooted to the foot of the league standings.
Lopez returns to Spain after three and a half years in China, where he worked as assistant manager to Gregorio Manzano at Beijing Guoan.
The 49-year-old has been handed the reins at Los Carmenes until the end of the season and his immediate task will be to arrest a four-match losing streak when the team travel to Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday.
Lopez, who previously managed Cadiz, Albacete, Cordoba and Murcia in his homeland, has 13 games to save the Andalusians from relegation, where they are currently four points adrift of safety.
