Napoli missed the chance to move past Juventus at the top of the Serie A standings after they were held to a 1-1 draw by AC Milan on Monday.
- Napoli 1-1 AC Milan
- Lorenzo Insigne puts Napoli ahead in 39th minute
- Giacomo Bonaventura scores equaliser five minutes later
- Neither team able to break deadlock in second half
Napoli controlled possession in the first half and had numerous opportunities to score, but the team from Naples had to wait until the 39th minute to edge ahead.
However, Napoli’s lead did not last very long as Milan took advantage of some poor defending and brought themselves level just before half-time.
Napoli were the superior team for a majority of the first half and created numerous opportunities to score early on, but couldn’t convert. It wasn’t until the 39th minute that they finally took the lead as Insigne’s strike from 25-yards out took a cruel deflection off Milan defender Ignazio Abate and bobbled into the far corner.
Just five minutes later the Rossoneri made it 1-1 through Bonaventura. The midfielder was on hand at the back post to latch on to Kalidou Koulibaly’s failed clearance and side-footed a volley past goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
With nothing separating the teams heading into the second half, Insigne nearly grabbed a second in the 67th minute as his shot from 10-yards rattled against the post.
Gonzalo Higauin almost put Napoli ahead in the 82nd minute when his volley from a cross by Faouzi Ghoulam went inches wide of the post.
Both sides missed chances late on and were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
