Andres Iniesta has dismissed claims that Barcelona demonstrated a lack of respect towards Celta Vigo with their alternative penalty routine in a 6-1 win on Sunday.
Lionel Messi opted for a cheeky pass to Luis Suarez from the spot rather than taking a shot, the latter slotting home to secure his hat-trick.
Many described the action as distasteful, but Iniesta insists that Barca are always respectful towards their opponents.
“We are the first ones to try to respect our opponents and the way they play,” Iniesta told the official Barcelona website. “I do not think that the penalty was disrespectful.”
Iniesta did admit, though, that he was surprised by the move, but believes the duo had it planned out beforehand.
“My reaction to the penalty was one of surprise because of the way they executed it, but I’m happy it was a goal,” he added.
“Personally, I haven’t seen them work on that in training, but I am convinced it was planned.”
