Former Porto striker Benni McCarthy believes that Jose Mourinho is the only man who can help Manchester United stand up to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
The Spanish coach, currently at Bayern Munich, is destined to succeed Manuel Pellegrini at City; while Mourinho is currently out of a job since leaving Chelsea, but has been persistently touted as Louis van Gaal’s successor at Old Trafford.
McCarthy, a former South Africa international who worked under Mourinho during his time at Estadio do Dragao, believes the Portuguese tactician is one of the few people who can counter the Catalan’s influence at the Etihad Stadium.
“Mourinho is one of those people who knows how to beat Guardiola’s tactics,” the former Blackburn Rovers forward told BBC Sport.
“When he was at Real Madrid, he beat him a couple of times. At Inter Milan, he also had success against him.
“At the moment, I can’t see anyone taking on Pep and his tactics at Manchester City. But Mourinho at United, he would have the resources, the players and the financial backing to beat Guardiola.”
