A 93rd minute Salomon Rondon strike earned West Brom an unlikely 1-1 draw with Swansea at the Hawthorns in the Premier League on Tuesday.
- West Brom 1 Swansea 1
- Sandro makes debut
- Berahino left on the bench
- Sigurdsson opens scoring
- Rondon grabs late equaliser
The match remained 0-0 after a fairly poor first half from both teams in which chances were not easy to come by.
However, the action picked up considerably after the break and Gylfi Sigurdsson put Swansea ahead in the 64th minute with a slightly fortuitous goal.
It seemed as if the Icelander’s strike would be enough to secure the points for the Swans, until Rondon scored a dramatic 93rd minute equaliser to ensure the home side left the match with a point.
Darren Fletcher tested Lukasz Fabianski as early as the second minute with a crisp header, but the Polish stopper made a fine diving save.
Sandro, making his debut for West Brom after arriving from QPR on loan, announced his presence early on and can count himself fortunate not to have been sent off in the fourth minute when he went into a challenge with his studs showing, but got away with the yellow card.
Despite the excitement the early exchanges promised, the match settled down into a gritty midfield battle that produced few chances in the first half.
Thankfully, things picked up in the second half as Swansea began to take control of the match.
West Brom failed to heed the warning signs and Sigurdsson was able to put his side ahead in fortunate circumstances as he was in the right place at the right time in the 64th minute.
Alberto Paloschi tried to dribble through the Baggies defence, but the ball cannoned off a defender and into the path of Sigurdsson, who slid the ball into the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
West Brom woke up from their slumber after the goal and began pushing for an equaliser. Chances fell for Victor Anichebe, Rondon and Saido Berahino, but a mixture of good luck and great goal keeping from Fabianski protected the Swans lead.
The visitors nearly had the points in the bag in the 87th minute but Paloschi’s powerful effort hit the post.
They were made to rue the missed chance deep into injury time when Rondon found an equalising goal. A frantic goal-mouth scramble led to the Baggies striker poking the ball home to earn his side a valuable point.
