Athletic Bilbao hosted Sporting Gijon in La Liga on Monday, running out comfortable 3-0 winners at San Mames.
Aritz Aduriz was the star performer on the night, very nearly grabbing his first goal in the opening minutes with a header after rising to meet a cross from Oscar de Marcos.
Bilbao did open the scoring just before the half-hour mark, as Markel Susaeta tapped in for the simplest of goals after a well-worked move involving several players.
Aduriz added the second just before the break after Omar Mascarell committed a foul inside the box.
The 34-year-old stepped up to the spot to take the penalty, and though first-time effort was saved by Garcia Alberto in the Gijon goal, his follow through put him right in the path of the rebound, allowing him to atone for his initial effort by firing the ball into the back of the net.
The hosts continued to dominate the contest in the second half, and they would be rewarded in the 67th minute when Beñat Etxebarria delivered a pinpoint pass to Aduriz, who beat Alberto with a powerful strike into the bottom right corner to bag his brace.
The win sees Bilbao move into 12th on the table, while Sporting Gijon stay just one spot above the danger zone in 17th.
