Mainz 05 midfielder Yunus Malli is set to remain at the club after his proposed move to BVB Dortmund fell through.
The Turkey international has been a revelation this season, netting eight times in 18 league appearances thus far.
The 23-year-old was expected to follow former Mainz boss Thomas Tuchel to the Westfalenstadion and the two clubs had already agreed a deal.
However, Mainz have now pulled the plug on the deal as they are unwilling to lose Malli in the January transfer window.
“I informed Dortmund on Monday evening that Yunus will remain in Mainz,” sporting director Christian Heidel told the club’s official website.
“The decision was not made based on finances, but rather we weren’t sold on the overall idea. We had agreed a transfer fee with Dortmund, but the timing of the move isn’t optimal for us.
“Yunus is not only our top scorer, but also an important part of the team. And we did not want to tear the team apart as it is.”
