Spanish giants Barcelona were held to a 0-0 draw at third division side Villanovense in their Copa del Rey clash on Wednesday night.
With most of their stars given the night off, Barca were nearly shocked in the opening stages of the match when Pablo Moraga found himself in some space in the final third, though his shot was wide.
Barcelona responded with a well-worked move of their own in the midfield, which ended in a shot for Gerard Gumbau from 25 yards that only just missed the woodwork.
Villanovense were holding their own and came close to scoring again through Elias, who beat a couple of defenders before firing his effort at Jordi Masip in the Barcelona goal.
Marc Bartra and Javi Sanchez both had decent chances for the visitors before the break, but neither could convert.
In the second half, Sandro Ramirez' powerful shot in the opening minutes very nearly broke the deadlock, and the forward had another opportunity from the edge of the box a few minutes later, though it was saved by Jose Fuentes.
Villanovense should have scored when Angel Pajuelo found himself with only Masip to beat, but a slip at the vital moment would see the opportunity go begging.
Marc Bartra nearly made the hosts pay minutes from time, but his header forced a fine save out of Fuentes as the game ended scoreless.
The second leg will take place on December 2 at the Camp Nou.
