Atletico Madrid missed out on the chance to climb back to the La Liga summit after they were held to a goalless draw by 10-man Sevilla at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday.
Barcelona moved into pole position on Saturday courtesy of their 2-1 win at Malaga, but victory in the Spanish capital would have taken Atletico three points clear at the top of the table.
However Diego Simeone’s side failed to deliver, despite playing the final 29 minutes with a numerical advantage following the dismissal of Sevilla midfielder Vitolo for two bookable offences in the second half.
The hosts dominated proceedings but they were met with a wall of resistance from the Andalusians, whose goalkeeper Sergio Rico had a fine game as he denied Yannick Carrasco and Gabi with superb saves.
Antoine Griezmann came closest to breaking the deadlock when he sent a header crashing back off the crossbar early in the second half, having missed two chances to score towards the end of the first period.
