Bremen recovered from being a goal behind with strikes either side of half time and a late third to beat Schalke 04 3-1 at the Veltins Arena in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
- Schalke 1 Bremen 3
- Matip opens scoring
- Fritz equalises before half time
- Pizarro puts visitors in front
- Ujah seals the win.
The home side could not have asked for a better start to the match as Joel Matip out-jumped his marker to send his header into the top corner and give Schalke a 1-0 lead from Johannes Geis’ corner in just the fourth minute.
They held the advantage for most of the first half before Clements Fritz glided through their defence and unleashed an unstoppable shot from the top of the box to make the score 1-1 with a fantastic solo effort in the 43rd minute.
The visitors continued their comeback eight minutes after half-time as Fritz provided the cross for Claudio Pizarro, who controlled the ball beautifully before accurately finishing past Ralf Fahrmann in the Schalke goal to give Bremen a 2-1 lead.
Fritz provided the assist for the third goal too, with a superb lofted pass for Anthony Ujah, who made no mistake from about 10-yards out to give Bremen a hard-fought 3-1 win.
The Miners burst out of the blocks and found themselves ahead just four minutes into the game as Matip rose above the visiting side’s defence to get on the end of Geis’ corner and header the home side into a 1-0 lead.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar spurned two chances to extend their lead as they continued to dominate the first half.
However, a lapse in concentration shortly before half time allowed Bremen back into the game. Schalke’s defence seemed to fall asleep in the 43rd minute and Fritz dribbled through almost unchallenged before belting the ball past Fahrmann to level the scores at 1-1.
The Werderaner carried their momentum into the second half and soon found themselves ahead just eight minutes after the restart. This time Fritz turned provider as he crossed the ball in for Pizarro, who controlled it superbly with a delicate first touch before shooting past Fahrmann to put the visitors 2-1 up.
The home side missed a glorious opportunity to go level in the 81st minute as Junior Caicara burst into the box to get on the end of a killer through-ball from Max Meyer, but Jannik Vestergaard got across brilliantly to block his shot.
Eight minutes later, Bremen secured the win as Fritz played in Ujah, who slammed the ball into the goal to give the visitors an unassailable 3-1 lead.
