Reus smashes home opener
Mkhitaryan doubles the lead
Raffael pulls a goal back
Gundogan seals big win
It was mostly plain sailing for BVB Dortmund as they opened the scoring through Marco Reus with four minutes remaining in the first half.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan added a second just before the break, before Raffael pulled a goal back for Borussia MG.
However, Ilkay Gundogan put paid to any hopes of a Gladbach comeback when he slotted home late on.
It was business as usual for Dortmund in their first game after the winter break as they immediately set to work on putting pressure on the Gladbach backline.
And they were nearly ahead in the ninth minute when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rolled the ball wide of the far post after making contact with a Lukasz Piszczeck cross.
At the other end, Lars Stindl just about failed to fire off a shot after he was picked out at the far post by Raffael.
Ilkay Gundogan then rattled a sumptuous effort off the cross bar after a lovely bit of interplay going into the box in the 33rd minute.
Dortmund got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 41st minute when Reus smashed a fierce effort into the bottom after latching onto a delightful through ball without breaking stride.
Mkhitaryan really should have doubled the advantage just before the half-time break after drilling an effort into the side netting after an Aubameyang cross had taken a kind deflection.
Monchengladbach were desperately close to finding an equaliser two minutes after the restart when Roman Burki raced off his line to deny Ibrahima Traore, before Stindl fired over the rebound.
However, it was soon 2-0 to Dortmund after Mkhitaryan raced down the pitch to get on the end of a Reus pass before slotting home with a delightful finish.
Gladbach did pull one back in the 58th minute throuh Raffael, who did well to fire into the bottom corner from a deft Stindl pass.
Aubameyang squandered a gilt-edged opportunity in the 73rd minute when he horribly misfired when one-on-one with Gladbach stopper Yann Sommer.
Gundogan would make no such mistake mere minutes later when he fired in a Mkhitaryan cross to seal the win.
