Iraq advanced to the semi-finals of the AFC U23 Championship courtesy of a 3-1 win over the United Arab Emirates in Doha on Saturday.
There was very little to choose between the two sides in the opening stanza as the first half ended 0-0.
The UAE then took the lead when Alaa Ali Mhawi scored an own-goal. However, Iraq’s Ali Hisny would capitalise on a defensive error just two minute later to equalise.
The UAE’s Mohamed Surour made a mistake and keeper Shambih was out of position, leaving Hisny with an open goal.
The teams then entered extra time and just before the half time of the first period, Mohanad Abdulraheem netted a powerful header to give Iraq the lead.
Amjad Attwan Kadhim then sealed the win, sliding the ball into the back of the net with the last play of the game, cueing celebrations from the Iraqi camp.
The win sees Iraq booke semi-final clash with Asian giants Japan on Tuesday, who advanced via an impressive 3-0 win over Iran yesterday.
