It was honours even at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland and Bournemouth played out a tightly-contested 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon.
- Sunderland 1 Bournemouth 1
- Afobe strikes early on
- Stanislas misses a sitter
- Van Aanholt rifles in equaliser
- Grabban misses gilt-edged chance late on
It was a quick start to the game for Bournemouth and they took the lead after just 12 minutes when Benik Afobe headed home the opening goal.
However, Patrick van Aanholt had Sunderland back on level pegging just before the half-time break.
There were chances for both sides in the second half, but neither were able to find the breakthrough and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
Marc Pugh nearly had Bournemouth ahead in the 10th minute when he slid a tantalising ball across the box for Afobe, but the striker just couldn't connect on the stretch.
There would be no denying Afobe just two minutes later, though, heading home a diving header from a wonderful Junior Stanislas cross.
Stanislas really should have doubled the advantage in the 15th minute, but somehow contrived to fire wide with an open goal beckoning after Victor Mannone had failed to gather a Pugh cross.
Sunderland were back on level terms in the first minute of added time when Van Aanholt rifled in the equaliser after a great run on the overlap.
After the break, Jermain Defoe nearly had the Black Cats ahead when he unleashed a dipping effort which nearly caught Artur Boruc off guard, but ended up sailing just wide of the mark.
Lewis Grabban nearly snatched the win for the Cherries in the 81st minute, but again managed to fire wide from five-yards out with no one around him.
