Match summary

The Red Devils created a fair amount of chances to break the deadlock in the first period but could not find a way past Fraser Forster in the Saints goal.

The chances dried up for United after the half-time break as Southampton piled on the pressure. A sustained passage of possession for the Saints eventually took its toll on the United defence in the closing stages of the contest as Austin headed home from James Ward-Prowse’s cross.

Full report

The first half was a fairly drab affair, with goalscoring chances at a premium for Southampton while the Red Devils managed just one shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

Frenchman Anthony Martial had the first chance of note, firing wide of the left-hand post from outside the area after latching onto a pass from Marouane Fellaini.

Next up was Daley Blind, who managed to direct his left-footed effort on target, only for Fraser Forster to keep out the goal-bound effort.

The Saints briefly threatened through efforts from Cédric Soares and Victor Wanyama, while at the opposite end of the pitch, Rooney and Jesse Lingard squandered good chances for the Red Devils.

Unfortunately, there was very little in the way of goal-mouth action after the half-time interval, with United in particular struggling to create chances.

In fact, it was Southampton who looked more likely to find the breakthrough.

Wanyama headed just inches wide of the left-hand post in the 62nd minute following Ryan Bertrand’s inviting cross into the danger area, while Oriol Romeu fired over from outside the box on 68 minutes.

Shane Long very nearly fired the Saints head in the 80th minute, but his header from the centre of the box flew high and wide.

However, Southampton weren’t to be denied in the 87th minute as Ward-Prowse whipped in a cross towards the danger area, where Austin got above his marker to head into the bottom-right corner, sending the visiting supporters into wild celebrations.

United had one last chance in the fourth minute of injury time, but substitute Adnan Januzaj dragged his shot from the left side of the box wide of the right-hand post.
