  • Hunt free-kick restores parity
  • Lewandowski deflects Muller shot home
  • Alaba denied by the woodwork

Match Summary

The defending Bundesliga champions took the lead in the closing stages of the first half when Lewandowski converted from the spot after Muller had been brought down by goalkeeper Rene Adler inside the 18-yard area.

However, they were pegged back just eight minutes into the second half by Aaron Hunt’s curling free-kick, which took a touch from Xabi Alonso on its way into the back of the net.

Lewandowski would restore Bayern’s lead on the hour mark, though, with the striker deflecting Muller’s shot past Adler to secure victory and take Pep Guardiola’s side 11 points clear of the chasing pack.

The hosts made the better start and they almost broke the deadlock when Dennis Diekmeier fired at goal on the stretch from just outside the area, with his shot narrowly missing the target.

But the Bavarians were handed the advantage via the penalty spot on 37 minutes after Adler raced off his line to intercept Muller, but only resulted in bringing the striker down.

Lewandowski made no mistake from 12 yards out to give the visitors the lead at the break.

Bruno Labbadia’s team regrouped at half-time and got back into the contest just eight minutes after the restart. Hunt’s set-piece eluded a lunging Pierre-Michel Lasogga, but not Alonso, who got something on the ball as it beat Manuel Neuer in goal.

Neuer played a part in restoring Bayern’s lead on 61 minutes, with the keeper distributing the ball from the halfway line and Muller ran at goal before unleashing a shot that took a telling deflection off Lewandowski into the back of the net.

David Alaba came close to extending their advantage five minutes later with a free-kick that came back off the frame of the goal, but Hamburg offered no further threat and Bayern came away with the three points.
