Safiq: It’s the title that matters

Johor Darul Ta'zim captain Safiq Rahim has said that being named the AFC Cup final's Most Valuable Player is an added bonus to his side achieving their goal of claiming the title.

JDT beat FC Istiklol 1-0 in Saturday's final in the Tajikistan capital of Dushanbe, with Leandro Velazquez scoring the only goal of the match. It was from a Safiq corner that Leandro scored, and the midfielder put in a tireless display throughout.

Speaking after the match, Safiq said that it was the team's triumph that was much more important than any personal accolades.

“I am happy with our victory,” he said. “We made great work together with teammates and coaching staff. It’s great for me that I’ve been chosen MVP for the tournament. But the most important thing is the team and the trophy.”

The 28-year-old lauded his team for a spirited effort against the odds of playing away from home and on artificial turf.

“I am proud of how we worked and won the title tonight,” added Safiq.

“Both teams put on a good game, but we kept our focus until the end of the match and we won the AFC Cup.”
