Liverpool have reportedly agreed on a deal in principle to sign defender Joel Matip on a free transfer from Schalke 04 in the off-season.
The 24-year-old centre-back’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning he is currently free to talk to other clubs about a potential move at the end of the campaign.
The Reds were said to be keen to land Matip for a nominal fee in the January transfer window, but an injury to centre-back partner Benedikt Howedes scuppered the deal.
Liverpool instead settled on signing Steven Caulker from Queens Park Rangers on loan until the end of the season.
And they have since put a deal in place for Matip to arrive at the club when his deal expires, but manager Jurgen Klopp remained coy on any move.
When asked about the club’s interest in Matip and Schalke teammate Leroy Sane, Klopp said: “Are we interested in Sane and Matip?
“They are Schalke players, right? It is correct that we are looking at all options.”
