Atletico Madrid are through to the next round of the Copa del Rey after Antoine Griezmann’s late brace sealed a 3-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano at Estadio Vicente Calderon on Thursday.
- Atletico Madrid 3 Rayo Vallecano 0
- Correa puts Atleti ahead
- Griezmann brace kills the game off
The tie was wide open after the first leg finished in a 1-1 draw, but Atletico Madrid had the lead by halftime of the second leg thanks to Argentine forward Ángel Correa, who curled one into the far corner five minutes before the break.
Los Rojiblancos then put the game to bed in the closing stages when Antoine Griezmann found the net from close range and then bagged his second in stoppage time.
Atleti were the first to really threaten the deadlock in the 10th minute, when Jackson Martinez forced Yoel into a diving save with a header from Koke’s cross.
The first half was characterised by plenty of fouls and few efforts at goal, but five minutes from the break Atleti struck through Ángel Correa, with Yannick Carrasco laying it off for the Argentine forward to find the top right corner.
There was still time for some more action before the half ended, and Quini came close for Rayo before Yannick Carrasco almost doubled Atletico’s advantage, but the first half finished with just the one goal in it.
As the hour mark passed Lass, Adrián Embarba, and Quini all tried to strike that crucial equaliser for Rayo, while Jackson Martínez was heavily involved for Atletico, but he couldn’t double his side’s lead despite being trigger-happy throughout the night.
With 10 minutes left, Antoine Griezmann put the game to bed for Atleti with a close-range finish from a corner. The French forward then had his brace 10 minutes later, striking in stoppage time to add some gloss to the scoreline.
