The United Arab Emirates (UAE) beat Australia 1-0 in Doha, while Jordan were 3-1 winners over Vietnam in Thursday’s Group D action in the AFC U23 Championship.
The match between Australia and the UAE got off to a scrappy start, with the Olyroos edging possession but lacking quality in the final third.
The UAE had two solid chances late in the first game, a last ditch tackle neutralising Abdalla Ghanim’s advance before Sultan Saif forced a solid save out of Jack Duncan in the Australia goal.
Both teams looked more enterprising in the second half, and Australia should have taken the lead just shy of the hour mark, but Connor Pain made a hash of his shot from inside the area.
The UAE looked to have gotten the ball over the line shortly after, but their celebrations were cut short by the linesman’s flag.
A draw looked the most likely result, but unfortunately for Giancarlo Gallifuoco, his attempted clearance from a corner five minutes from time beat his goalkeeper Duncan and flew into the net.
Over at the Suhain Bin Hamad Stadium, Jordan had too much firepower for Vietnam, kicking off their AFC U23 Championship campaign with a comfortable 3-1 win.
Neither side impressed in the opening 30 minutes, although the first chance finally arrived for Baha Faisal a few minutes later, with the opener following shortly after.
A pass from Ahmad Hisam finally managed to split the Vietnamese defence, allowing Faisal to round the goalkeeper and tap the ball into an open net.
Nguyen Cong Phuong could have equalised with a header two minutes prior to the break, but it was just wide.
Jordan were much improved in the second half, with Mahmoud Al Mardi coming close to scoring on two separate occasions, but it was Maanasrah who doubled the lead midway through the half after being given too much time and space on the left, allowing the full back to fire in via the underside of the crossbar.
The home side made sure of the points just four minutes later. Hisam tried his luck from range, and while his shot hit the crossbar, Faisal headed home the rebound thanks to a diving effort.
There was an 86th minute consolation goal for Vietnam courtesy of a Do Duy Manh volley, but it had no effect on the result.
