Sampdoria held, Empoli down Palermo

Chievo hosted Sampdoria at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi and came from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw.

The visitors were quickest out of the blocks and opened the scoring in just the eighth minute when Carlos Carbonero sent Edar through on goal with a clever pass, the Portuguese striker maintaining his composure before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

After a period of sustained pressure, Chievo finally equalised on 34 minutes, Roberto Inglese on target after being picked out inside the box by Meggiorini.

The hosts would have several chances to equalise in the second half but none were converted, and Edgar Barreto almost made them pay at the other end with a volley at the back post.

Chievo applied plenty of pressure in the closing stages, and Nicola Rigoni nearly snatched all three points in the dying moments, but his shot was saved as both teams stayed rooted in mid-table.

Riccardo Saponara's goal in the 53rd minute was enough to hand Empoli a 1-0 win over Palermo

Empoli were looking threatening right from the get-go and had a number of golden opportunities to take the lead, but they either missed or were denied by Palermo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino.

Palermo also failed to convert their opportunities and the match remained deadlocked at half-time.

However, eight minutes after the break Saponara curled his free kick under the wall and into the bottom corner.

Palermo desperately searched for an equaliser after falling behind, but were unable to bring themselves level despite having a number of chances, and Empoli managed to hold on and escape with a 1-0 win.
