Rojiblancos sitting pretty at the top of La Liga

Atletico Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0 to finish the weekend as league leaders while there were also wins for Villarreal, Real Sociedad and Eibar.

In the pick of Sunday's action Atletico Madrid ventured to the Estadio Municipal de Balaídos to play Celta Vigo. France's Antoine Griezmann continued his impressive season as he opened the scoring for Atletico shortly after half-time, hitting the back of the net for the ninth time in the league this season. Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco then doubled his side's advantage as he finished a fantastic individual effort with his left-foot. The 2-0 win sees Diego Simeone's men finish the weekend two points ahead of Barcelona who lie in second. 

Cedric Bakambu completed a brace as Villarreal beat Sporting Gijon 2-0 at the Estadio El Madrigal. The goals saw the Congolese forward reach eight for the season and helped his side get within a point of Real Madrid who occupy third spot with 40 points. 

Real Sociedad benefitted from a strong finish as two goals from Jonathas, both set-up by Carlos Martinez, saw them overcome Valencia at the Estadio Anoeta. Sociedad's fifth win of the season has created a five point buffer between themsleves and the relegation-zone. 

Eibar entered La Liga's top-six when they picked up three more points at home against Espanyol. Takashi Inui scored early in the first half to give José Luis Mendilibar's side the lead. However, Espanyol's Joan Jordan cancelled out that goal seven minutes later with a strike of his own. With 16 minutes of regular time remaining Borja Baston scored the winning goal after Eibar were awarded a pentalty. 

Las Palmas held Malaga to a 1-1 draw at the Estadio de Gran Canaria in their bid to remain in Spain's top league. Tana got Las Palmas' goal while veteran striker Roque Santa Cruz scored the equaliser for Malaga.
