Serie B side Spezia beat Roma on penalties, while Serie A stragglers Carpi claimed a 1-0 victory over Fiorentina in Wednesday's fourth round Coppa Italia action from Italy.
After a goalless draw at the Stadio Olimpico, it was left to penalties to decide the contest between minnows Spezia and Roma, and to everyone's surprise it was the second tier club that came away 4-2 winners to advance to the quarter-finals.
Salih Ucan had a good chance for Roma in the first half, and Edin Dzeko was ruled marginally offside when he put the ball in the back of the net shortly after.
Defender Antonio Rudiger made two important interventions late in the second half to deny Spezia, and the two sides could not be separated in extra time either.
The contest moved on to a penalty shoot-out, where misses from Miralem Pjanic and Dzeko first up would see Spezia through.
There was another surprise result between two Serie A sides at Stadio Franchi, as second-placed Fiorentina were beaten 1-0 by Carpi, who are second from the bottom.
The decisive goal came in the 76th minute, as Antonio Di Gaudio cut in from the left before curling his shot into the far bottom corner.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men deep into stoppage time when Gonzalo Rodriguez and Jerry Mbakogu were sent off for a scuffle, but it had no affect on the result.
Over at Stadio San Paolo in Naples, Napoli were comfortable 3-0 winners over Verona.
The hosts set up a quarter-final against Inter Milan thanks to first-half goals from Omar El Kaddouri and Dries Mertens, and a tap-in from Jose Callejon 15 minutes from time.
In the final match of the evening in Turin, Juventus claimed an emphatic 4-0 victory over Torino, with most of the damage being done after Cristian Molinaro received a second yellow card early in the second half, reducing the visitors to 10 men.
Simone Zaza gave the hosts the lead just shy of the half-hour mark before doubling his tally shortly after Molinaro received his marching orders.
Paulo Dybala added a third in the 73rd minute before Paul Pogba made it four nine minutes later.
