Valencia beat minnows Barakaldo 2-0 at the Mestalla on Wednesday evening to advance to the Copa del Rey last 16 and hand Gary Neville his first win as head coach.
• Valencia 2-0 (5-1) Barakaldo
• Santi Mina scores early
• Alvaro Negredo doubles the advantage
Having already secured a 3-1 win in the first leg, Valencia didn't really need to get out of first gear in their second leg of their Copa del Rey last-32 encounter against Barakaldo.
A goal inside the first 10 minutes from Santi Mina meant the tie was all but over and Alvaro Negredo made sure there was no miracle comeback from the second division side as he made it 2-0 in the 31st minute.
Valencia started the game with one foot already in the last 16 after they beat Segunda Division Barakaldo 3-1 a fortnight ago.
And Gary Neville didn't have to wait too long for his team to take the lead on the night as Santi Mina, who scored a late equaliser against Barcelona in La Liga two weeks, headed home a cross after only eight minutes.
Midfielder Armiche and forward Iker Hernandez had some shots at Maty Ryan’s goal, but it wasn't really enough to trouble the Valencia goalkeeper.
Los Che doubled their goal tally on the night in the 31st minute as midfielder Andre Gomes set Alvaro Negredo on his way and the striker made no mistake with the left-footed shot.
With the game and the tie wrapped up Valencia took their foot off the pedal, knowing that their names will be in the hat for the last-16 draw.
