Bilbao too good for Linense

Athletic Club Bilbao booked their place in the last 16 of the 2015/16 Copa del Rey in emphatic fashion as they hammered Linense 6-0 at San Mames in Bilbao on Wednesday evening.

Having recorded a 2-0 victory away from home in the first leg, Bilbao started the second leg on the front foot and claimed the lead after just nine minutes, Oscar de Marcos finding the bottom-left corner from the centre of the box.

However, the hosts had to wait until the second half to add their second, Javier Eraso converting Mikel Balenziaga's inswinging corner with aplomb.

Linense's resistance crumbled following the second goal as Athletic Club pushed extra men forward in a bid to add to their advantage.

Xabier Etxeitia, Raul Garcia and Kike Sola all got in on the act, adding three more goals in quick succession to put the result beyond any doubt.

And Bilbao rubbed further salt in the wounds of Linense when Mikel Rico added his name to the scoresheet one minute from full-time.

At Estadio Municipal De Ipurua, meanwhile, Eibar mounted a brilliant comeback against Ponferradina in their second-leg tie, overturning a 3-0 deficit to clinch a 4-3 win on aggregate.

The match sprang to life in first half injury time when Borja slotted home to give Eibar's supporters hope of an improved second-half showing.

Jose Luis Mendilibar's men picked up where they left off in the first, adding a second through Sergi Enrich on 62 minutes before Simone Verdi notched a third to level the scores on aggregate.

Eibar kept pressing for a fourth and the sustained pressure eventually took its toll on the Ponferradina defence, who gave away a penalty in the 85th minute. Mikel Arruabarrena stepped up to take it, and made no mistake, firing the ball into the bottom-left corner to send the home support into wild celebrations.

Despite producing a mammoth effort in their second-leg clash on Wednesday night, recording a 3-1 victory at home to Rayo Vallecano, Getafe were knocked out of the Copa del Rey.

Rayo's 2-0 win at home, coupled with the crucial away goal, secured their passage through to the last 16 of the competition.

First-half goals from Pedro Leon, Santiago Vergini and Alvaro Vasquez put Getafe in the driving seat at Coliseum Alfonso Perez. However, all their hard work was undone in the 52nd minute as Lass Bangoura fired home to give Rayo the lead on the away goals rule. Getafe never managed to recover from the setback as the visitors very nearly added a second in the final 15 minutes with a series of good chances.

At Estadio Anoeta, Las Palmas just about held on to clinch a 3-2 aggregate victory after playing to a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad.

Willian Jose headed home on 37 minutes to give the visitors a two-goal aggregate lead before Sergio Canales popped up in the first minute of the second half to restore parity.

Sociedad were unable to build on their strong start to the half, though, as Las Palmas held firm in the remaining minutes to book their place in the draw for the last 16.
