Blanc defends ‘tired’ PSG

Laurent Blanc has leapt to the defence of his PSG side after their sub-standard performance after the 1-0 win over Saint-Etienne in the Coupe de la Ligue quarter-final.

Edison Cavani spared Les Parisiens blushes after coming off the bench in the second half to score the winning goal, in the 86th minute, after a game in which the French giants looked a bit out of sorts.

Blanc defended his teams performance and insisted he's proud of the mentality of the squad after a heavy run of fixtures.

"This is our eighth game in 23 or 24 days," Blanc explained to Goal. "We play every three days. Physical and psychological fatigue exists.

"It is a crazy schedule. My players are not machines. It was a typical cup match. We never gave up, and I still had a few weapons on the bench, which allowed us to win the game.

"At half-time, I told them it was insufficient, but we must also understand that the rate is a bit high for them.

"We are defending champions and we will not sell our titles. We will play to win the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue, even though we clearly have larger goals," the former France boss concluded.

PSG currently lead Ligue 1 by 17 points and are in contention to win the quadruple after qualifying for the last-16 of the Champions League and are still in contention for both the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue.
