Former Chelsea caretaker boss Guus Hiddink is not expected to return to the Blues helm for Saturday's crunch clash with Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.
The 69-year-old met with officials from the London club on Friday, but has not agreed a deal in time to take charge of the Blues ahead of the Premier League encounter.
First-team coaches Eddie Newton and Steve Holland will oversee the side against the Black Cats, with Hiddink expected to be officially unveiled by the club next week.
Hiddink enjoyed a successful spell at Stamford Bridge in 2009, after being handed the reins on a temporary basis following the sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari.
He won the FA Cup during his brief stint in charge, but was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti ahead of the 2009/10 campaign.
