Match summary

The visitors claimed the lead five minutes from the half-time break as Thomas Muller converted from the penalty spot following an alleged handball in the danger area.

Despite creating a whole host of good chances, Bayern were unable to add to their advantage, thanks to a combination of wasteful finishing and good goalkeeping by Ron-Robert Zieler.

Full report

As expected Bayern started the Bundesliga encounter on the front foot and threatened the Hannover 96 goal as early as the fifth minute, Thiago Alcántara seeing his goal-bound effort from the centre of the penalty area saved by Zieler in the home side's goal.

Hannover were quick to hit back with a chance of their own, but Leon Andreasen was denied by Manuel Neuer before Mevlüt Erdinc fired high and wide from the rebound.

Later efforts from Kingsley Coman and Robert Lewandowski were kept out by Zieler, before Xabi Alonso fired wide of the right-hand post following a well worked corner.

Pep Guardiola's men went agonisingly close to grabbing the lead on the half-hour mark, but Lewandowski saw his powerful effort come back off the left-hand post.

The visitors continued to push forward in numbers and created a series of good opportunities, with Muller and Lewandowski denied by Zieler before Thiago fired just inches wide of the mark on 34 minutes.

The sustained pressure finally took its toll on the Hannover defence in the 39th minute, when Christian Schulz was adjudged to have handled the ball in the danger area. Muller stepped up to take it and made no mistake, calmly stroking the ball into the bottom-right corner.

Bayern very nearly made it two on the stroke of half-time, but Zieler was alert to the danger, quickly getting down to smother Arturo Vidal's goal-bound shot.

The Bavarians picked up where they left off after the break, with Thiago firing wide of the left-hand post before Vidal saw his well placed shot snapped up by Zieler in the 53rd minute.

However, they were unable to make their chances count as chance after chance was squandered.

Lewandowski was denied by Zieler in the 56th minute, while Javi Martínez fired wide of the left-hand post one minute later.

In fact, were it not for Zieler the result would have been far more convincing, especially after he denied late efforts from Lewandowski and Muller.
