Match Summary

The main incidents of the first half were two penalties, both of which were conceded by Yuri Berchiche and taken by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese winger blasted his first effort over the crossbar, but his second attempt found the net.

Sociedad struck back early in the second half when Bruma, a first-half substitute, curled one into the top corner before Ronaldo restored Madrid's lead, bagging his second of the game with a volley from Marcelo's corner.

The Basque side had a couple of half-chances to equalise, but Madrid put the game to bed in the 86th minute when Gareth Bale's cross found Lucas Vasquez on the edge of the box and the substitute took a great first touch before slotting it home with aplomb.

Although Sociedad got the first shot of the game in the early stages, it was Real Madrid who forced the first real save. Gareth Bale did well to win a corner, with Pepe coming up from the back and meeting the ball with an on-target header that needed a good hand from Geronimo Rulli to tip it over the crossbar.

A couple of minutes later and Rulli was called into action again twice in quick succession, first denying Cristiano Ronaldo's effort from Bale's cross, before the ball fell to Karim Benzema in the box, the French striker's low half-volley needing him to get down quickly and make the block. Sociedad's Yuri Berchiche, meanwhile, beat Danilo but got crunched by the onrushing Keylor Navas before he could pull the trigger.

Madrid should have taken the lead in the 23rd minute when they were awarded a penalty after Benzema was brought down (albeit rather easily) under a challenge from Yuri Berchiche, but Ronaldo blasted his spot kick over the crossbar.

Madrid had another penalty five minutes from halftime, given for a handball by Yuri that obstructed Bale's cross. Ronaldo stepped up for the second time and made no mistake, keeping it under the crossbar and beyond the diving Rulli.

Sociedad were then level just after the break, a 49th-minute attack down the left flank saw Jonathas switch it across to Bruma, lurking inside the box on the left, who took a touch before curling a splendid effort into the top corner. It was a great goal from the Portuguese winger, who had come on as an 18th-minute substitute for Imanol Agirretxe.

The Basque side could well have taken the lead with a couple of good chances for Bruma in the subsequent minutes. The 21-year-old was unleashed into space behind the defence with a neat through ball, but Keylor Navas was quick off his line to collect after a heavy first touch. A bit later and a clever one-two flick on the edge of the box put him through again, but he had Pepe for company.

Rulli was then involved again at the other end when Bale met a pass from James Rodriguez and sent in a strong drive towards the bottom corner, forcing the Argentine stopper into another fine save.

But Rulli was unable to stop Madrid's second. Marcelo's corner was sent in deep towards the edge of the box, where Ronaldo met it with a volley through the crowded penalty box and in at the bottom corner.

There were further chances for Sociedad to equalise, with Ruben Pardo fluffing once chance before forcing a block from Pepe with a subsequent effort. The midfielder was also involved at the other end as the subject of a penalty appeal from Madrid when his arm allegedly touched the ball.

But it didn't matter as Madrid wrapped up the points with a third goal soon afterwards. Lucas Vasquez, introduced in the 75th-minute for Benzema, was front and centre to meet Bale's superb cross in from the left flank. The young Spaniard took a great first touch on the edge of the penalty area before tucking it away into the bottom corner.
