The debate in football for more than a decade now has been over two extraordinary players – Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The pair has been regarded as the greatest to ever play the game on several occasions, with one seldom preferred over the other. And now, a former Real Madrid has weighed in on the argument.
Fabio Capello might be remembered best for his four-year-long, and largely unsuccessful, stint as the England National Team head coach. However, the Italian has also managed Real Madrid in the past on two separate occasions.
Both of Capello’s reigns at the Bernabeu lastest for just a year and came before the time of Cristiano Ronaldo. Nevertheless, he has now weighed in on the ongoing debate about the best player on the world – picking Lionel Messi as his preferred choice.
“It’s one thing to be an outsider, and another thing, to be a genius,” said Capello (via Marca).
“The difference is enormous since a genius does what nobody imagines,”
However, Capello’s praises for the Argentine star do not stop there. The Italian manager goes on to state that Messi is just one of the three geniuses to ever play the sport.
“Ronaldo is an extraordinary footballer, but Messi is a genius.
“There have been three geniuses in football: Pele, Maradona and Messi.”
Both Messi and Ronaldo have been in stunning form this season. While the former has forty-five goals and twenty-one assists to his name this season, the latter has contributed with twenty-five goals and twelve assists, having played four games fewer.
