Buriram United to cancel contract with former Premier League striker

Thai giants Buriram United signed several new players for the 2019 Thai League campaign. Amongst those were Luong Xuan Truong, Modibo Maiga, Stephan Palla, Hajime Hosoghai, and Pedro Junior. However, they could be set to bid farewell to one of the stars already!

Buriram United signed Modibo Maiga in January 2019, after his contract with United Arab Emirates-based Ajman club came to an end. The ex-West Ham United star even proved to be a crucial part of the matchday squad earlier this season, appearing six times while scoring two goals.

However, Maiga has since not made an appearance for the Thunder Castles and has been omitted from the matchday squad entirely. The Mali star has missed Thai League games against Pattaya United and Chiangrai United. Meanwhile, the former West Ham star also missed the AFC Champions League game against Beijing Guoan.

Quizzed about his absence, Buriram United boss Bozidar Bandovic had this to say:

“We will let you know soon, about him (Maiga).”

Meanwhile, the Thunder Castles were subjected to a second defeat in three matches in the AFC Champions League, as they went down to Beijing Guoan. The Chinese Super League side led by three before the hour mark, courtesy of a Cedric Bakambu hattrick.

The Thai side pulled a goal back late on through Suphanat Mueanta, who became the competition’s youngest ever scorer. However, they didn’t trouble the away side much and lost three-one.
