Reports: Real Madrid were in discussion with Jose Mourinho while he was still manager at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s widely touted return to Real Madrid has been in the works for some time now, even dating back to the time that he was still the manager of Manchester United.

Francesc Aguilar of Mundo Deportivo reports that Jose Mourinho has been in talks with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez for months and that the two parties had started negotiations when the Portuguese manager was still in charge of Manchester United.

He also claims that Perez considers Mourinho as the ideal person to take over at Real Madrid and instill a winning mentality after the dressing room seems to have been broken following Julen Lopetegui’s sacking and Santiago Solari’s ill-fated tenure.

Hype level: 100 – Ajax released an inspirational video to get their players and fans in the mood ahead of the Real Madrid game. It seemed to do the trick!

For his part, Jose Mourinho is also interested in the job with a source close to the manager claiming that terms are on the cusp of being agreed between the Portuguese tactician and the club, barring a few sticking points – namely deciding on the incomings and outgoings in the summer.

However, Aguilar also claims that bringing back Zinedine Zidane as the manager is Florentino Perez’s first choice, but the Frenchman is reported to only want to take on the job in June  –  a timeframe that Perez isn’t willing to entertain given the instability at the club currently.

Perez wants an immediate fix and Jose Mourinho may reportedly be the man that offers that.
