England Under-21 manager Gareth Southgate is happy to see his players moving through to the senior squad after Tottenham pair Eric Dier and Dele Alli both got senior call-ups.
The two midfielders are in Roy Hodgson's squad for friendly matches against Spain and France, on Friday and Tuesday respectively, alongside other recent youth-team graduates such as Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.
"That's the nature of the job," Southgate said ahead of his team's Euro 2017 qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday. "Your very best players are always going to go straight through.
"From conversations with Roy at the beginning of this campaign it was clear Luke Shaw, John Stones and Raheem were going to be with Roy from the start.
"Our aim is for more to get there. Eventually you hope the senior team is strong and it's more difficult for the younger players and they have to work for longer but at the moment those guys are there on merit.
"We have lost a few players so it's an opportunity to have a look at others which is always exciting."
