England limped to 103/5 at the close of play on day two of the second Test against India still trailing the hosts by 352 runs.
Earlier England had managed to bowl India out for 455 with the hosts only able to add 138 runs to their overnight score.
Virat Kohli (167) could not go on to his third Test double century as he was dismissed in the 11th over of the day by Moeen Ali. The spinner had him caught at slip the ball after Ravi Ashwin had been dropped in the corden with Ben Stokes making amends for his error.
Wriddhiman Saha (3) and Ravindra Jadeja were both trapped leg before by Moeen just a few overs later and England looked set to close out the Indian innings quickly.
Debutant Jayant Yadav and Ravi Ashwin would proved stubbron resistance though adding 64 for the eighth wicket.
Ashwin (58) will be disappointed with his dismissal as he flashed at one outside of from Stokes after a barrage of short balls.
Umesh Yadav (13) joined Jayant (35) at the crease and the two would hit a few to the fence before both fell to Adil Rashid and the innings closed on 455.
In reply England were in trouble early on as Mohammed Shami produced an absolute ripper to account for Alastair Cook (2) slipping between bat and pad and smashing the top of the off stump right off.
Haseeb Hameed (13) fell victim to an awful mix up with Joe Root to be run out for 13 and expose the England middle order early.
Ben Duckett could only add five to the total before he got a snorter from Ashwin that beat him all ends up and crashed into his stumps.
Root marked his fiftieth Test with a half century but went shortly after Duckett to leave England reeling at 79 for 4.
Having been spared by umpire Kumar Dharmasena's finger a number of times in Bangladesh Moeen (1) was given not out by the Sri Lankan after being struck on the pad by Jayant but the debutant was convinced he had his man and reviewed, in what turned out to be a great decision as the left-hander was adjudged out after the replays.
Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes guided England to the close without any further damage and much will be expected of this pair as England seek to get back into the game.
