Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming tour to Zimbabwe with injury.
Sri Lanka cricket did not give a specific reason for his withdrawal from the squad but sources close to the team claim a recurring calf muscle injury is keeping him at home.
The skipper joins his deputy Dinesh Chandimal on the injured list and veteran spinner Rangana Herath will lead the team in Mathews absence.
A statement issued by Sri Lanka cricket read: "Sri Lanka Cricket is pleased to announce that veteran spinner Rangana Herath will lead the Sri Lanka team in the two test series against Zimbabwe commencing October 29 in Harare."
The squad going to Zimbabwe is especially inexperienced apart from a small group of veterans and it will be an interesting test of the depth of cricket on the island when they face Heath Streak's men in Harare.
The first Test gets underway on October 29 in Harare.
