5 instances when Captain Cool MS Dhoni lost his calm

It’s not often that you see Captain Cool MS Dhoni lose his calm on the cricket field, or even off it. But recently in India’s premier T20 Cricket Tournament – Indian Premier League (IPL) – the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain let emotions get the better of him.

There have been instances in the past as well when the former Indian captain got angry on the cricket field and here five such occasions.

#5 After third umpire’s decision was overturned

Dhoni was captain of the Indian side on their tour to Australia in 2011/12. In an ODI against the hosts at Brisbane, when on-field umpires overturned the third umpire’s call, he was visibly infuriated. The wicketkeeper appealed for a possible stumping against Mike Hussey on Suresh Raina’s bowling, which the on-field officials referred to the third umpire.

Though the replays from one of the angles showed that Hussey’s back leg was just behind the crease, he was adjudged out. However, the on-field umpires, having seen the replays on the big screen in the stadium, called the Australian back. And this extracted a reaction from Dhoni, who usually tries to keep his calm.

#4 Misunderstanding while running with Irfan Pathan

During the IPL in 2016, Dhoni and his former Indian teammate Irfan Pathan were playing for Rising Pune Supergiant. When the duo were batting together in an encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders, a misunderstanding while running saw Pathan give away his wicket to save the wicketkeeper-batsman.

However, it was the CSK legend who called for the run before realising his mistake and then forced Pathan to sacrifice his wicket. The video of the incident was first uploaded by IPL’s YouTube channel but it was later taken down.

#3 Shouting at Manish Pandey

This was one incident which became quite famous all around India. Dhoni was batting with Manish Pandey during a T20I against South Africa. The wicketkeeper was trying to get Pandey’s attention to update him for the plan for the next ball.

However, Pandey, standing at the non-striker’s end, wasn’t looking at Dhoni which prompted the latter to shout at him to get his attention. The Indian cricketing legend could be seen shouting expletives at Pandey in the video.

#2 Another misunderstanding while running with Yuvraj Singh in World Cup final

India were cruising to a victory in the World Cup final with both Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh at the crease. Though the wicketkeeper-batsman is known to be very composed in the latter half of the innings, the occasion got the better of his emotions.

Even though Indian needed only 22 runs from as many balls, Dhoni wasn’t happy at his all-rounder teammate when he refused a second run. The Men in Blue eventually went on to win the match with the Indian captain winning the man of the match award while Yuvraj Singh winning the player of the tournament.

#1 Rushing on to the field after a mix-up in umpire’s decision

While CSK were involved in an edge of the seat encounter against Rajasthan Royals, captain Dhoni decided to walk on to to the field despite being adjudged out earlier that over. CSK needed eight runs from three deliveries when umpire adjudged a Ben Stokes’s delivery no ball.

The square leg umpire, however, cleared that the ball wasn’t an illegal delivery later and the decision was overturned. This infuriated Dhoni, who was in the dugout, to walk out on the field and argue with the umpires.

CSK eventually won the match with Mitchell Santner hitting a six off the last ball.
