India’s top Olympic gold medal hope in Tokyo; Wrestler Bajrang Punia becomes world number 1

In a moment of pride for Indian fans, their Olympic wrestling hope Bajrang Punia has managed to become world number one in the men’s 65 kg freestyle category.

This isn’t the first time that Punia has found himself at the pinnacle of wrestling as per the rankings in his category, with the feat being achieved back in November as well.

But as he prepares for the Asian Wrestling Championship in China to be held from April 23, it is a major boost to his confidence as well as his dreams of bringing home an Olympic gold for India at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

The 25-year-old is the man who India have their hopes pinned on following his incredible displays in the 65 kg freestyle wrestling category lately.

Punia won the gold medal at the Asian Games as well as the Commonwealth Games, and is well on his way to getting even better in preparation for next year’s Olympic Games.

The United World Wrestling had no choice but to ensure the Indian grappler ranked number one, and easily ahead of Akhmed Chakaev of Russia. Here’s to hoping he makes the nation proud once again at the Olympics.
