Light heavyweight hot prospect Volkan Oezdemir wants to tackle Alexander Gustafsson, during the wait to decide Jon Jones’ fate.
The UFC light heavyweight division is on hold at present while champion Jones faces a potential drugs violation.
If he is stripped of the title, then the belt is expected to be restored to Daniel Cormier, who lost the championship in a second defeat to Jones at UFC 214.
Like Jones, Oezdemir was also victorious at UFC 214 after an impressive quick-fire knockout over Jimi Manuwa. The Swiss fighter’s last two wins against Misha Cirkunov and Manuwa have totalled just 70 seconds.
That has put Oezdemir in line for a light heavyweight title shot, but he believes that a clash against Gustafsson – who had been tipped to face Jones next – is the best way to decide the number one contender during the period of uncertainty.
“While everyone is figuring out the situation, I’ve got time to fight somebody who’s not in the situation right now, which is Gustafsson,” he told Fighters Only.
“I think Gustafsson is not part of the current situation with Jon Jones and the USADA violation, so, in the meantime, me and Alex have all the time in the world to get ready for a fight.
Times like these remind me how blessed I truly am. So much to be grateful for

“I think in a perfect world it will be me fighting Gustafsson and then I fight Cormier – or whoever’s going to be there for the belt.
“Or, even more perfect, my next fight will be for the belt – maybe, if they don’t know what to do with the belt, me and Gustafsson will be for the interim belt. My focus right now is on Gustafsson.”
