Jones is an Albuquerque resident and is scheduled to defend his title against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 on May 23 in Las Vegas.
He is wanted by police for questioning over a car accident with a pregnant woman believed to be in her 20s who sustained minor injuries.
The authorities tried to get in contact with him at his Albuquerque home Sunday and reached out to Jones’ lawyer, but weren’t successful in their attempts.
"Yes, he is the suspect and we're hoping that he will contact us to give us his side of the story," Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Simon Drobik told MMAFighting.com.
Subsequently, the UFC released the following statement:
"We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident. We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available."
The incident isn’t the first time that the 27-year-old fighter is in trouble with the law. He was arrested in 2012 while driving under the influence, and was tested positive for cocaine in December 2014 during an out-of-competition drug test.
