Luke Rockhold wants to return to the UFC in July to fight Ronaldo Souza before reclaiming his lightweight belt from Michael Bisping later in the year.
Rockhold was pulled from his scheduled rematch against Souza, which was set to go down in November 2016 at UFC Fight Night 99, with an ACL injury that has side-lined him since.
Rockhold beat Souza in 2011 in their only previous meeting.
In response to Souza’s claim that he is scared of a rematch, Rockhold was scathing.
“I think Jacare [Souza] is right where he was before I left,” Rockhold said on MMA Hour.
“Jacare [Souza] says I’m running, he wants to stay relevant, he wants to stay in the fight game, not wait around.
“He’ll have to wait a while [for a title shot] given the current situation, so I’d love to go in there and fix that situation and finish my business with that man.
"If the time works for him, I think that July timeframe, it plays nicely for me. I want Jacare, I’m not looking to dance around. I’m going straight through the gut of the division back to my title.
“I think he’s slow, I think he’s stiff and I think he forces the fight as to where I flow with the fight."
Rockhold has not fought since losing his middleweight title to Bisping in surprising fashion.
He is desperate to get it back though and is not a fan of the current champion.
“I think Bisping is a coward and he’s running and trying to get irrelevant fights,” Rockhold continued.
Bisping has defended his title once since winning it. He beat Dan Henderson in October last year.
Yoel Romero is expected to face Bisping in May after the Briton recovers from knee surgery.
Should Rockhold and Souza fight in July, the winner will almost definitely get a shot at the title.
It sure is fair to say there is plenty going on in the division!
