Tyron Woodley will put his welterweight title on the line against Stephen Thompson at UFC 205 in New York on November 12.
Woodley was crowned the new welterweight champion when he knocked out Robbie Lawler in the first round of their bout at UFC 201 in July.
After winning the title, Woodley revealed that he wanted his first title defence to be against Nick Diaz or Georges St-Pierre, but he will instead face Thompson, who is currently on a seven-fight win streak.
Even though he will be facing an opponent who last lost in April 2012, Woodley is excited that he will be part of the UFC’s historic event at Madison Square Garden.
“You will see the welterweight champion of the world, don’t get it confused, I’ll be taking on Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in New York City, November 12th, UFC 205, Madison Square Garden,” Woodley, who has won his last three fights, said.
As of now, it is unclear whether Woodley’s clash with Thompson will serve as the main event of UFC’s first event in New York since their ban on MMA was lifted earlier this year.
