John Lineker needed just under three minutes to knock out Michael McDonald in the main event fight at UFC Fight Night 91 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Wednesday.
Lineker came into the bout on a four-fight winning streak, while McDonald had defeated Masanori Kanehara in his last fight at UFC 195 in January, which followed a two-year absence from the Octagon.
After the fighters failed to trade blows in the first minute, the Brazilian rocked McDonald after connecting with a right hand. Clearly shaken, McDonald, who once fought for the interim UFC bantamweight title, tried to fight back, but Lineker landed two more clean strikes to leave his opponent in all sorts of trouble.
McDonald managed to get in a few shots of his own, but his efforts were in vain as Lineker delivered a left hook that put McDonald on the canvas. The 26-year-old landed further strikes when the American was down before referee Herb Dean stopped the fight with 2:43 on the clock in the first round, extending Lineker’s unbeaten streak to five fights.
In other results, Tony Ferguson triumphed over Lando Vannata via submission in the second round of their bout, Tim Boetsch knocked out John Samman in the second round, and Daniel Omielanczuk downed Oleksiy Oliynyk via a majority decision.
