Glover Texeira has called out light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier after breaking a two fight loss streak with a win over Ovince Saint Preux at UFC Fight Night 73 on Saturday.
Texeira was defeated by Jon Jones in his first title challenge in April 2014 and suffered another unanimous decision loss to Phil Davis in his next fight in October.
In Tennessee on Saturday he weathered a barrage of strikes from Saint Preux in the first two rounds, before taking down the home favourite and submitting him with a rear-naked choke.
“I’m back. Cormier I told you before I’m coming for you. I’m on the right track,” he said in the octagon after the victory.
The entertaining performances from both men saw the match announced as “Fight of the Night” and earned each of them $50 000 in bonus winnings.
However, the performance is unlikely to earn Texeira a second title shot as Cormier is expected to face another former challenger in Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 in October.
Texeira is currently ranked fourth in the lightweight division, behind second-placed Gustafsson and Ryan Bader in third.
Bader is currently riding a four-fight win streak – after defeating Saint Preux in August 2014 and Davis in January – and could also receive his shot at Cormier before Texeira.
