Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza is not interested in anything but claiming the UFC middleweight title.
It has been speculated that the winner of the fight between Souza and Vitor ‘The Phenom’ Belfort at UFC 198 on Saturday will get a shot at the division’s crown, which currently sits on Luke Rockhold’s head.
It was of course Rockhold who defeated Souza to claim the Strikeforce middleweight championship back in 2011.
Despite a potential rematch being on the cards between the two, Souza claims that he is not after revenge, but rather after a title and is confident that Saturday is simply a stepping stone to reaching that goal.
“To fight for the belt is my ultimate goal,” Souza said.
“It’s where I want to get to. I think this fight accredits me to get that title shot. I don’t see it going any other way.
“I’m not focusing on any specific fighter.”
Despite his unwavering belief in his own ability, Souza was full respect for Belfort in the build-up to their bout and explained that the victor will be the fighter who can enforce their style first.
“I admired his way of fighting, but he wasn’t exactly a role model,” Souza said of his views on Belfort growing up.
“I think, obviously, he has the advantage on the feet and I have the advantage on the ground. It’s where I’m the most comfortable.
“That’s what this fight is going to be about. It’s going to be about who can impose their game and dictate where the fight goes. I’m sure he’s going to be very well prepared to go either way the same way I am.”
