UFC light heavyweight Glover Teixeira will fight Rashad Evans at UFC on FOX 19 on Saturday, however the former has his sights set on a future bout with Anthony Johnson.
Johnson is believed to be waiting for a shot at the light heavyweight title. In the wake of champion Daniel Cormier’s injury-withdrawal from UFC 197, Jon Jones is now fighting Ovince Saint Preux.
Cormier is expected to meet the winner of that fight later this year. Only once those two fights have been completed, is Johnson likely to get the opportunity to be crowned king of the division.
Teixeira feels that wait will be too long for Johnson and wants to fight him after Evans.
“If the fight makes sense, let’s do it,” Teixeira told MMAjunkie at an open workout in the build-up to Saturday’s main event at UFC on FOX 19.
However, Teixeira was quick to dismiss the notion that he was thinking too far ahead.
“Right now, in my mind, I have a very tough opponent to pass through in front of me.”
Teixeira stepped in to Saturday’s fight as an injury replacement. He appears ready though.
In other fights on the main card of UFC on FOX 19, Rose Namajunas meets Tecia Torres in the Women’s Strawweight, Khabib Nurmagomedov locks horns with Darrell Horcher at 160 lbs, and Cub Swanson does battle with Hacran Dias in the featherweight division.
