Miesha Tate has revealed that she will be aiming for champion Holm Holm’s chin during their women’s bantamweight title fight at UFC 196 on Saturday.
Holm was crowned champion last November last year when she stunned the UFC community by ending Ronda Rousey’s unbeaten streak at UFC 193.
However, Tate believes that Holm’s reign as champion will be a short one as she has noticed a trend where Holm seems to get into a spot of trouble after being hit on the chin.
“I think that Holly’s chin might be a little bit suspect,” Tate, who is currently on a four-fight winning streak, told reporters. “I have seen her wobbled a couple of times. There were some punches that didn’t look like they were anything more than I could deliver, that’s for sure. I think that’s a little bit questionable, too.
“I’ve watched some of her fights and I’ve seen her chin get tested, and I think it’s a little bit suspect. I saw Raquel [Pennington] put her down with a shot and actually even Ronda caught her with a left hook and she wobbled. So it just leads me to think that she might have great striking, but maybe a glass chin, too.”
Should Tate’s plan fall flat, there is every possibility that she may not get another title shot for some time as she lost to Rousey via submission in a title fight at UFC 168 in December 2013. As a result, Tate is viewing this fight as her last chance to become champion.
Tate was supposed to fight Rousey at UFC 193, but was snubbed in favour of Holm, which led to her contemplating retirement. However, after deciding to prolong her UFC career, Tate is ready to grasp her chance and even added that should she beat Holm, she wants to face Rousey again as she has lost twice to the 29-year-old.
“I realize now, in this moment, that those lows are there so the highs are better,” she said. “I have a different outlook on this opportunity. I thought I had [the title shot] before. It was taken [away], and now I’ve got to make the most of this. I feel like this is exactly how it was supposed to play out.
“And after I beat Holly, it will make a lot more sense for me to fight Ronda again.”
