Stephen Thompson says he can’t be denied UFC title shot after knocking out former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 82 fight at in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Thompson, who now owns a six-fight winning streak, defended Hendricks’ takedown attempts, froze him up with his movement and nailed him with hard crisp punches to win the bout.
In an interview with FOX Sports afterwards, Thompson said he felt he was now ready for a title shot against Robbie Lawler.
“I think after that performance, they have to give it to me,” Thompson told FOX Sports.
“I think what I did tonight shows I’m ready for that title shot.”
“I think it would be an exciting fight,” he continued.
Thompson feels that he has earned a championship shot next, however, he wasn’t willing to say he’d play hardball with the UFC and demand a title fight, next.
“That’s what I’m shooting for,” he specified.
“If they happen to say, ‘no, we want you to fight someone else,’ of course, I’ll do that,” he added.
