Smolka makes Holohan submit

Louis Smolka silenced the fans at the 3Arena in Dublin when he made Irishman Paddy Holohan submit in the second round of the main event of UFC Fight Night 76.

Smolka and Holohan's bout was promoted to the main event after Dustin Poirier and Joseph Duffy's lightweight fight was cancelled due to the latter suffering a concussion while training.

Holohan made the first move and got a quick takedown against Smolka. While on the bottom, Smolka tried to lock in a d'arce choke but was unable to hold on.

Holohan also started taking the submission route and caught Smolka in a guillotine choke, but the 24-year-old broke out. Smolka later attempted to go for a leg lock, but his move was countered and he was taken down by Holohan.

However, the Irishman found himself in trouble towards the end of the first round as Smolka caught him with a big head kick, a volley of elbows and numerous wild hooks.

In the second round, Smolka started off by trying to lock in the rear naked choke before putting Holohan in a guillotine choke when he tried to back on his feet. After that didn't get Smolka the result he wanted, the Hawaii native started hammering away at Holohan before catching him in a rear naked choke, which the Irishman submitted to.

For Smolka, this was his first victory via submission in the UFC, in which he is now 4-1. Holohan's record meanwhile slipped to 3-2.
