UFC president Dana White has confirmed that Chris Weidman will face Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 in June in a rematch for the middleweight title.
Rockhold was crowned the new middleweight champion when he knocked out Weidman in the fourth round of their bout at UFC 194 on December 12.
Weidman has been eager for a rematch with Rockhold since seeing his two-year reign as champion come to an end, and his wish has now been granted by White, who confirmed the fight while appearing on FOX Sports’ Garbage Time.
Should Weidman avenge his loss to Rockhold and regain his title at UFC 199, he will make history by becoming the UFC’s first two-time middleweight champion.
There was speculation that Rockhold’s first title defence would be against Vitor Belfort or Yoel Romero, but those rumours have since been quashed as Belfort will fight Ronaldo Souza at UFC Fight Night 87 in Brazil on May 14, while Romero’s future is unclear as he was recently notified of a potential doping violation by USADA.
